Dolby Atmos + Intec = the sweetest, coolest, most bad%*$ innovation in cinema since the introduction of Dolby Digital back in 1992 (if you’re keeping track, yes that was almost 25 years ago!). Everyone had to have the Bose (it chokes me to write that name) system with the little surround speakers and the subwoofer. Most of you, or your parents, bought it not knowing exactly why, you just knew you had to have it. Why? Because it sounded awesome! Well, let’s look at why it sounded the way it did. We explain to people all the time when they want audio in their home and tell us they want “surround sound” that most likely that’s not what they want. Most people want to be able to listen to their favorite tunes in the kitchen, or in the living room, possibly in the master bathroom and of course on the patio. That, my friends, is not surround sound. What you are looking for is actually called distributed audio because it is distributed throughout the house. Surround sound is why you had to have that Bose system (choke, choke), which gave you “5.1 Surround Sound”!!!!! Can you hear the angels singing??? You had two (2) speakers for your front left and right {2 speakers}, one (1) speaker for your center channel where you heard most of the speaking parts coming straight at your face {1 speaker, plus the first 2, now we’re up to 3 speakers), and two (2) speakers for your rear left and right which 99% of the time were not put in an ideal listening location {these 2 , plus the other 3 gives us our 5}. I know, what about the “.1”, well, that is your subwoofer. I’ll let you do the math on 7.1, however just for your general knowledge, 5.2 or 7.2 is the same set-up with 2 subwoofers instead of 1. So there you are, watching a movie surrounded by all these speakers and freaking out when a helicopter flies in the scene from over your right shoulder. Pretty cool, right?
